INSTITUTIONAL AND DOMICILIARY BIRTHS.
The notifications show that 842 births took place in institutions,
hospitals and private nursing homes. This is 13 less than
1948 and represents 83.2 per cent of the total, as compared
with 77.1 per cent for the previous year. These births occurred
in the following hospitals and institutions:—
St. Helier Hospital 438
Nelson Hospital 300
St. Theresa's Hospital 8
Kingston Hospital 9
Other hospitals, institutions and nursing homes 87
842
It will be seen that although a smaller number of births
took place in Institutions this year (842 as compared with 855
last year), the percentage is higher (84% as compared with 77%).
This of course is because the total number of births this year
is lower, and it shows that there is yet no diminuation of the
trend towards Institutional births. It should of course not be
forgotten that it is not until the housing situation improves that
we shall know normal demand on accommodation.
