POPULATION.
The Registrar General's figure for our population for the
mid-year 1949 is 75,470. This is the highest figure ever recorded
for the area. Last year the Registrar General had estimated
that our population had dropped by 70 from the 1947 figure of
75,290, which was the previous highest. At the time of writing
this it has been announced that we are to have a census in
1951. It will be remembered that the last census was in 1931.
It will be of great assistance to have up-to-date factual data
once more as methods of estimation, however accurate, can
never be absolutely precise. Moreover, it will afford the
opportunity of obtaining a considerable amount of information
of value to those engaged in social medicine.
BIRTHS.
There were 985 registered live births in 1949. This is the
lowest figure recorded since 1941. The birth rate at 13.05
is the lowest recorded since 1937. This year's number of births
is 102 less than last year, and last year's figure was 258 below
the previous year; so that in the past two years, from our 1947
record figure of 1,345 our number of births has fallen by 360.
There were 14 stillbirths, making a total of 999 births.

There were 37 illegitimate births, all of which were live births. This gives an illegitimate birth rate of 37.5 per thousand. The appended table shows the comparison since 1937:—
