VITAL STATISTICS.
Reference has been made in the Preface to the satisfactory
record revealed by the vital statistics for the year 1943.
The birth rate was 17.4 per 1,000 population with a total
number of live births of 1,146.
The death rate was 8.7 per 1,000 population compared
with the corresponding figure for England and Wales as a
whole of 12.1 per 1,000 population.
The infant mortality rate was 23.5 per 1,000 live births
as compared with a figure of 49 for England and Wales.
These figures establish three records for the district, the
lowest infant mortality rate ever recorded, the highest total
number of births ever recorded, and the highest birth rate
since 1923.
