REPORT OF CHIEF SANITARY INSPECTOR.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit the Annual Report which summarises the
work carried out by your Sanitary Inspectors during the year
ended 31st December, 1939.
Housing Inspections. The total number of houses inspected
during the year for "Sanitary defects" under the
Public Health and Housing Acts, was 317.
Details of the work carried out and of the sanitary improvements
effected at houses are included in the tabulated
statement at page 49.
Systematic inspection of working class houses was continued
as a routine during 1939, and in this connection 149
houses in the undermentioned roads were subjected to detailed
survey and the necessary particulars recorded in accordance
with the Housing Consolidated Regulations:—

The majority of the repairs and improvements made were
executed by the owners as the result of the service of informal
notices. No works were undertaken by the Council in default
of owners and it was not found necessary to institute any
legal proceedings.
Notices specifying the necessary work required to remedy
sanitary defects were served upon owners of properties as
follows:—
