The following Table shows the number and percentage of families occupying from 1 to 5 rooms, and over 5 rooms, with the respective populations and the percentage of the whole population in private families, and the corresponding percentages of families and population in 1911:—

Excluding families of one person only, 512 families, with an average of
3.1 persons per family, occupied tenements of less than 4 rooms ; and 664
families, with an average of 4.3 persons per family, occupied four-roomed
tenements.
The average size of families in the District was 4.10, as against 4.43
in 1911.
In 1921, 23 one-roomed tenements, 17 two-roomed tenements, 12 threeroomed
tenements, 16 four-roomed tenements, and 7 five-roomed tenements,
or 75 in all, were occupied under conditions of more than two persons per
room, and their occupants formed 4.1 per cent, of the population in private
families. In 1911 there were 71 such tenements, containing 4.9 per cent,
of the population.
Rateable Value.—The Rateable Value of the District at Lady Day,
1926, was £193,399. The sum represented by a penny rate was £732.
Social Conditions.—The District is largely residential, and there are
no special industries. A considerable number of persons are employed
in the building trade, in brickmaking, at the Mental Hospitals, and in
connection with racing stables.
At the Census, 1921, the number of persons returned as engaged in
occupations were 4,479 males and 2,546 females. The chief numbers
enumerated under various occupations were as follows:—
