VITAL STATISTICS.
During the year 1,000 live births were registered as belonging
to this district, of which 486 were females and 514 were males,
as compared with 944 last year.
The live birth rate for the year was equal to 15.1 per 1,000
of population, as against 14.3 per 1,000 last year, the crude birth
rate being 15.5 per 1,000.
The birth rate for England and Wales was 15.1 per 1,000,
as against 14.9 per 1,000 last year.
Illegitimate Births
The number of births registered as being illegitimate was 29,
as compared with 26 last year.
The illegitimate rate was equal to 2.8 per cent. of the total
births, as against 2.9 per cent. in 1937.
