In four cases there is permanent impairment of vision of a varying degree. All these infants were born in hospital, and therefore received treatment at the earliest appearance of the eye condition.

Maternal Mortality.
Total number of notified births in the Borough in 1931 was
6384. Of this number 5266 were West Ham residents.
Number of deaths due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth,
16, seven of these being due to Sepsis, the remaining nine
from other causes.
Maternal Mortality Rate for 1931, 3.0 per 1000, compared
with 2.8 per 1000 in 1930.
Average age at death, 33 years.
