TUBERCULOSIS
On the 31st December 1947, there were on the Register
774 cases of Tuberculosis, of whom 621 were pulmonary cases and
153 non-pulmonary cases. The death rate from Pulmonary Tuberculosis
was 0.38 per 1000 of population, and for non-pulmonary Tuberculosis
0.09. The total death rate from Tuberculosis was 0.47 per 1000 of
population compared with 0.34 per 1000 of population in 1946.
The corresponding death rates for England and Wales in 1947 were:
Pulmonary 0.47 per 1000 of population; non-Pulmonary 0.08 per 3.00
of population. Total rate. 0.55 per 1000 of population.
The higher death rate may be reflection of the higher
incidenoe during the war. There is always a time lag between
higher incidence and higher mortality.
The number of new cases of pulmonary Tuberculosis was 64
compared with 71 in 1946. The number of new cases of non-pulmonary
tuberculosis was 6 compared with 9 in 1946.
This is satisfactory, but mass radiography is revealing to
us that a rise in the numbers diagnosed in the earliest stage of
infection would be to our advantage. The overcrowded and unhealthy
housing conditions at present react against any substantial reduction
in incidence.
The Sutton and Cheam Tuberculosis Care Committee continued
to function as a social welfare committee dealing with every social
influence affecting the patient and his family. The Committee
enjoyed the close co-operation of the lady Almoner for Tuberculosis,
whose fine work in the interests of the patients is worthy of the
highest praise. The scheme of allowances continued to operate
beneficially.

The following table shows the new cases and deaths in age groups.
