CIVIL AMBULANCE SERVICE
The Council's Ambulance Service operated satisfactorily
during the year. The number of calls increased. The staff carried
out their duties with keeness and efficiency. The service continued
to function in close association with the National Fire Service for
depot control and call purposes. The Austin Ambulance, which had
been submitted to much wear during the years of war, was given an
extensive mechanical overhaul, and a higher number of calls for
mutual support had to be made. The gift to the Council of an
American Red Cross Bedford Ambulance, well equioped and in good
mechanical condition, from the Board of Sutton and Cheam Hospital
in September, was a valuable and much appreciated addition to the
service, and replaced the adapted Civil Defence vehicle as a second
ambulance.
