TUBERCULOSIS
On the 31st December, 1946, there were on the Register
755 cases of Tuberculosis, of whom 604 were Pulmonary cases, and
151 Non-Pulmonary cases. The death rate from Pulmonary Tuberculosis
was 0.26 per 1000 of population, and for Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis
0.08. The total death rate from Tuberculosis was 0.34 per 1000 of
population, compared with 0.58 per 1000 of population in 1945. The
corresponding death rates for England and Wales in 1946 were:
Pulmonary, 0.46 per 1000 of population; Non-Pulmonary, 0.08 per
1000 of population. Total rate 0.54 per 1000 of papulation.
The lowering of the death rate from Pulmonary Tuberculosis
is satisfactory, but may still be a reflection of the lower incidence
of the disease in the years before the war, as there is always a lag
of years between higher incidence as occurred during the war years,
and higher death rate.
The number of new cases of Pulmonary Tuberculosis was 71,
the same number as in 1945. The number of new cases of NonPulinonary
Tuberculosis was 9, compared with 12 in 1945.
The hope of reducing the incidence of Tuberculosis lies in
improving the social and economic standards of the people as a whole,
in eliminating overcrowding, and in removing insanitary and unhealthy
dwellings, while making use of modern aids to diagnosis and modern
methods of treatment, and providing sanatoria of adequate capacity
to deal with the problem.
The Sutton and Cheam Tuberculosis Care Committee continued
to function with success in dealing with the many and varied social
problems connected with the disease. The Committee is essentially
a social welfare committee, and is now able to, devote its resources
to the intimate personal needs of patients and of their families,
and to assist materially in the rehabilitation of the patients.
The scheme of allowances continued to operate beneficially.

The following table shows new cases and deaths in
