Vital Statistics
These are given in Section A of this report. The birth rate of 12.1
is below that for England and Wales. The infant mortality rate was 22.6
as against 27.6 for England and Wales, and the neo-natal mortality rate was
20.0 per 1,000 live births.
The deaths of infants under one year were:—
Males Females Toted Rate per
Live Births
Legitimate 10 7 17 22.6
Illegitimate — — — —
10 Stillbirths were notified, giving a stillbirth rate of 13.1 per 1,000
total births and 0.16 per 1,000 population.
Care of Premature Infants
During 1952, 44 premature infants were born to residents of the
Borough, 12 of these births taking place at home and 32 in hospital or
nursing home. Of those born at home 11 were alive at the end of one
month; 25 of the 32 born in hospital or private nursing home survived.
Child Welfare Centres
Attendance at the six Child Welfare Centres has been well maintained.
Although some of the Centres are conducted in old buildings, it can be
said that the Borough is well catered for, as apart from the northern area
with its more scattered population, generally there is a Centre within a mile
radius of every home.
Attendance figures were made up as follows:—
Baptist Church Hall, Aldersbrook 1938
Ash ton Playing Fields, Woodford Bridge 2689
St. Barnabas Church Hall, Snakes Lane 1212
Fullers Road, South Woodford 4496
Cromwell Hall, Nightingale Lane, Wanstead 3425
