ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER
FOR THE
Year ended 31 st December, 1931
To the Chairman and Members of the
Education Committee.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit my Annual Report for the year 1931 on the
work of the School Medical Department.
There are 10 public elementary schools, with 19 departments
under the control of the Local Education Authority. These
schools provide accommodation for 7,069 children. The average
number of children on the school registers on March 31st, 1931,
was 5,186, and the average attendance 4,492, thus making an
average attendance of 87 per cent. The Special School at
Queen's Road has accommodation for 50 children.
2. CO-ORDINATION.
(a) There is complete co-ordination between the work of the
School Medical Service and that of the Maternity and Child
Welfare Department. In addition to the Senior School Nurse,
who devotes her whole time to the School Medical Service, there
are three School Nurse-Health Visitors. These latter devote
two-thirds of their time to Maternity and Child Welfare work,
and one-third to the School Medical Department. Children
attending the Infant Welfare Centres remain under the supervision
of the same Health Visitor after they commence school.
The work of the School Medical Service with its Ophthalmic
and Dental branches, and the Maternity and Child Welfare
Department are now centralised in the new Health Centre at
