The Connaught Hospital.
Major Baker has kindly supplied the following information:—
"During the last five years, certain large additions have been
made. In 1927 a New Ward Block was added, together with
additions to the Out-patients' Department, a new Casualty
building, new Quarters for the Resident Medical Officers, and
a new X-ray Department. Also a Nurses' Home was provided
with accommodation for forty-one Sisters and Nurses.
"In 1928 extensive alterations were made in the old portion
of the Hospital, a new Sanitary Block being added to the
Connaught Ward, and various alterations made in the Princess
Mary Adelaide and Hibbert Wards, whereby our ambition to
reach 100-bed accommodation was realised.
"During 1930 the top floor of the Nurses' Home was completed,
whereby an additional 14 bedrooms were added, waiting
room and two dressing rooms, together with sanitary accommodation
were provided for the X-ray Department. Also a
Stoving Plant was erected. A Massage and Electro-therapeutic
Clinic was secured (previously known as Comely Bank Clinic,
Ltd.), situated opposite the Hospital.
"The Council of the Hospital realise that the present accommodation
in the Hospital is inadequate, as we serve a population
of over 300,000 people, but further extensions are impossible
until the finances of the Hospital warrant it.
"During 1930, 674 Walthamstow residents were admitted.
"The 100 beds provided are allocated as follows:—Medical
cases 21, Surgical 31, Children 36, Private Beds 12. There
are facilities for operative surgery, X-ray work, dental,
ophthalmic and massage treatment. Pathological work is
carried out partly at the Hospital and partly at other Institutions."
The Staff consists of 22 Honorary Specialists, 3 Resident Medical
Officers, Matron, Sister Tutor, 10 Sisters, 5 Stafi Nurses, and 30
Probationers.
