Of the 1,019 cases, 425 were referred from medical inspections,
120 were referred from the School Clinic, 371 were " under
observation " cases re-examined, 81 were re-examined at parents'
requests, 2 cases referred by the Director of Education, and 20 were
referred from other sources.

The 1,019 children were not all suffering from grave defects of vision. The following table shows the vision in the worst eye, as tested by Snellen's Type :—

The children who saw g (practically normal vision) were suffering
from symptoms such as headaches, inflamed eyelids, etc., which rendered
further examination necessary.

Of the 1,019 children examined, 718 were found to require spectacles, 423 being children who had previously had spectacles and 295 (new cases) by reason of the following defects :—

Of the remaining 301 children,

(i) 15 were suffering from the following other diseases, and spectacles were not prescribed :—
