1. Rainfall.—The total rainfall registered in the district during the year
was 30.82 inches.
The greatest fall in 24 hours was registered on 1st August, being
1.52 inches.
The number of days on which rain fell was 168.
2. Population.

The number of patients and resident staff on the 30th June, 1939, at the following public institutions, was :—

Claybury Mental Hospital2,533
West Ham Mental Hospital1,411
Total3,944

The net population for 1939 of 165,856 is obtained by deducting the population
in institutions (3,944) from the Registrar-General's Estimate, 169,800
and this is the figure used as the basis for compiling the birth rate in this
year's Report; for the death rate the figure of 3,944 is deducted from 161,600
the Registrar General's estimated average population for the death rate
calculation, the figure used for the death rate is therefore 157,656.

3. Births.—The number of births registered during the year was 2,307

MalesFemales
Legitimate1,1491,106
Illegitimate1933

i.e., 2.25 per cent. of the births registered were illegitimate.
The birth-rate, calculated on the net estimate of the population of
165,856 is 13.9 per 1,000.
4. Deaths.—The total number of deaths of Ilford residents was 1,450.
This is obtained by taking the total deaths registered in the district (1,288),
subtracting the deaths of non-residents occurring in the district (386), and
adding the deaths of Ilford residents registered as having died in other
districts (548).
