spected by the Dentist, 3,523, or 62 per cent., were found to
require treatment.
Only 62 per cent. of these actually accepted treatment. If
all the cases accepted treatment it would be impossible for one
dentist to carry out the work.
This is an improvement on previous years, showing that the
good work of the Dentist is being recognised. In 1923, 53.3 per
cent., in 1922, 41.1 per cent., in 1921, 50.6 per cent. acceptances
of treatment were received.
Full details of the dental work can be seen in Table IV.,
Group IV., on page 111.
(d) Treatment of Uncleanliness— It was found necessary to
deal with 38 children under the Education Act, 1921, Section 87,
statutory notices being served on the parents. In 33 instances the
statutory notices not being complied with, the children were
brought to the School Clinic by the Nurse and cleansed.
The School Nurses paid 129 visits to the schools, for the purpose
of inspecting the heads and clothing of the children, with
the following result :—
Number of Children Inspected. Number Infected. Per Cent.
35,453 1,497 4
Here again the effect of the School Medical Service is being
steadily felt, the percentages for previous years being :—
1919 10.7
1920 10
1921 6
1922 5
1923 5
1924 4
No prosecutions were instituted during 1924 under Section 87
of the Education Act, 1921.
(e) Other Ailments.— During the past year 221 children have
been treated under the agreement with Queen Mary's Hospital,
Stratford. The parent receives a form from the School Medical
Officer, which is presented to the nose, throat and ear surgeon
at the hospital and arrangements are then made for treatment.
