Illegitimate Births and Deaths.—31 of the births
registered (11 males and 20 females) were illegitimate, that is 2.16
per cent. of the births registered. Seven illegitimate children
died under 1 year of age. One of these children, however, was
in the Girls' Village Homes, Barkingside, and should, strictly
speaking, not be included in the death-rate of Ilford infants,
although it is so included by the Registrar-General.
The deaths of the seven illegitimate children occurred as
follows :—
3 (aged 3, 9 and 10 months) died in the Romford Infirmary
from measles and broncho-pneumonia.
2 died within 24 hours of birth, 1 from want of attention
1 died in the Girls' Village Homes from bronchitis.
1 died in Romford Infirmary from marasmus. This child
was born in the Infirmary on May 24th, was taken out by the
mother on June 28th, but was re-admitted on the same day as
an unknown child, being deserted and abandoned.
None of the seven deaths of illegitimate children occurred in
foster-children.

The following table shows the death-rate of illegitimate and legitimate infants for the past five years :—
