The birth-rate of the parish of St. Gilea-in-the-Fields
was 31.5 being 14.0 per 1,000 higher than that of the
parish of St. George, Bloomsbury.
The high birth-rate of the parish of St. Giles-in-theFields
was again largely caused by the great number of
births at the Peabody Buildings, Great Wild Street, and
the British Lying-in Hospital, Endell Street.
According to the Annual Summary of the RegistrarGeneral,
there were 133,618 births registered in London,
equal to an annual birth-rate of 30.0 per 1,000.
The birth-rate in England and Wales in 1897 was 29.7
per 1,000 of the population, which is equal to the rate in
1896, and lower than that in any other year on record
excepting 1894.
