The macadamised roads in the District were repaired
and made good with broken granite, a steam roller being
used where necessary to level the surface.
The laying of the Hydraulic main in Tottenham Court
Road, hereinafter referred to on page 58 caused considerable
disturbance of the asphalte roadway of that thoroughfare,
and upon the French Asphalte Company being called upon
under the terms of their contract with the Board to reinstate
the paving, the Company represented to your
Engineer the advisability of availing itself of the opportunity
for relaying the whole area of the road, which the
Company were under contract to maintain until the year
1903. Your Engineer assented to the proposals of the
Company and the work was accordingly carried out in
March, 1898, the street being relaid in two halves lengthwise
of the street, to permit of vehicular traffic passing
during the whole time the works were in hand.
