Births and Birth-rate.
During the year the births registered in the three Sub-Districts
were as follows:—
St. George, Bloomsbury 425
St Giles South 761
St. Giles North 430
Entire District 1,616
of which 825 were males and 791 females.
These numbers do not accurately represent the birth-rate, either
in the whole District or in the Sub-Districts, and require correction;
for example, 21 of the births at the Workhouse were children of
mothers who belonged to the Strand Union and 149 of the children
born at the British Lying-in Hospital, Endell Street, belonged to
parents residing in various parts of the Metropolis; therefore, 170
births must be deducted, both from the entire District and from the
Sub-District of St. Giles South, in which they were registered.
This reduces the actual number of births to 591 for St. Giles South
and 1,446 for the entire District, and gives a birth-rate for the whole
District of 27.0 per 1,000, or 1 in 36.94, as the ratio of births to
population, and which will be seen more clearly in the following
table:—
