Influenza.
34 deaths were due to Influenza, or 96 less than in the previous year.
5 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of .09 per 1,000
of the population.
7 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, or at the rate of .17 per 1,000
of the population.
16 belonged to Mile End Old Town, or at the rate of .15 per 1,000
of the population.
6 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of .10 per 1,000
of the population.
The death-rate for the whole Borough was at the rate of .13 per 1,000
and that for London was .16 per 1,000 of the population.
Cancer.
320 deaths were due to Cancer, or 46 more than in the previous year.
67 belonged to the Limehouse District, or at the rate of 1.26 per
1,000 of the population.
47 belonged to St. George-in-the-East, or at the rate of 1.11 per
1,000 of the population.
136 belonged to Mile End Old Town, or at the rate of 1.29 per 1,000
of the population.
.70 belonged to the Whitechapel District, or at the rate of 1.27 per
1,000 of the population.
The death-rate for the whole Borough was at the annual rate of 1.26 per
1,000 of the population.
Cancer of the breast was responsible for 27 of these. Operations had
been performed in 16 out of the 27, but the disease had recurred and proved
fatal six years afterwards in two cases, four years in one case, three years in
four, two years in three, and one and a half years in three cases. Death had
occurred in less than a year after the operation in three instances.

The increase in the number of deaths is shown in the following table, although the population was gradually decreasing:-
