week in October, and the first week in November. The high death-rate in February
and March was coincident with a high death-rate in the Metropolis, and was caused
by the prevalence of influenza and diseases of the respiratory organs. The rise of
the death-rate above the mean during July was also coincident with a rise in the
metropolitan death-rate, and was due to the prevalence of summer diarrhoea. In
Shoreditch the lowest death rate for any one week during the year was in the first
week of December, when it stood at 14.5.
The age distribution of the deaths in the parish and its four sub-districts, is
shewn in Tables XXVII and XXVIII.
Of the 867 deaths registered under the age of one year, inanition, debility at
birth and prematurity caused 156, diarrhoea 130, causes not specified or ill-defined
99, bronchitis 86, pneumonia 81, convulsions 75, tubercular diseases 52, whooping
cough and measles 54, and enteritis 23. There were none caused by negligence at
birth, but 33 young infants perished through accidental suffocation in bed, 3 were
scalded or burnt to death and 4 met with violent deaths from other causes.
Of the total deaths during 1895, 30.3 per cent. were of children under one
year. In 1894 the percentage was 28.1; in ,1893, 25.7; in 1892, 25.6, and in 1891
it was 26.36.
The mortality amongst infants under one year of age was 203.7 per 1,000 births.
