FOOD CONDEMNED AND DESTROYED.
The street markets have been kept under supervision by your inspectors and
steps taken as far as practicable to prevent vegetable and animal refuse being
deposited in the roads and on the footways.
The unsound foodstuffs which came under the notice of your officers, and were
condemned and destroyed as unfit for human consumption comprised 11 boxes of
strawberries (33 lbs.), 1 bushel of oranges, 18 baskets of cherries, 1 owt. of tomatoes,
24 boxes of grapes, 60 lbs. of plums, 69 lbs. of soles, 2¾ cwt. of plaice, 1 cwt. of
haddocks, 3½ lbs. of bacon, 145 lbs. of rabbits, 20 lbs. of beef, 14 lbs. of pork, and
13¾ cwt. of yeast.
SMOKE NUISANCE.
During the year, several complaints as to nuisance from smoke were made to
the department and communications containing 15 separate complaints were received
from the London County Council. In all cases notices were served in accordance
with the Vestry's instruction and the necessary steps were taken to ensure the
abatement of the nuisances complained of.
LEGAL PROCEEDINGS.
It was necessary to take out 16 summonses against various persons for not
complying with the requirements of statutory notices served by order of the Vestry
in accordance with the provisions of the Public Health (Lond.) Act, 1891, and the
Metropolis Local Management Acts. '
