Meat rationing ended on the 5th July. 1954. and the two
wholesale meat depots were free to buy and trade without control
from the Ministry of Food. Carcases of Beef. Mutton, Lamb, Veal
and Pork both English and Imported became free to buy by the
butchers. For the first two weeks business was brisk and rather
hectic—prices rose but eventually found their normal level. It was
noticeable that the quality of the meat was excellent, but the
vigilance of the Sanitary Inspectors who carry out the inspection of
meat at Depots, Butcher's shops and Slaughterhouses became of
paramount importance.
MERCHANDISE MARKS ACT.
The attention of retail traders has been called to Orders in
Council made under the Merchandise Marks Act, 1926, relating to
the marking of Imported produce. On exposure for sale by retail,
goods are required to be marked with a show ticket clearly visible
to intending purchasers, bearing an indication of the origin, in
letters not less than half an inch in height.
The principal contraventions found during this year were the
absence of marking fresh apples and tomatoes. The tradesmen in
each instance immediately complied with the Act.
196 visits of inspection were made during the year, and thirtyone
contraventions found.
GAME ACT, 1831.
Nineteen licences were issued during the year for dealers in
Game to use premises in the district.
