notable part. Wood Green has certainly played its part, is still
doing so. More remains to be done until we can rest content that
conditions which encourage the spread of tuberculosis have been
banished from our midst.
Certain schools in Wood Green are still taking part in the
Medical Research Council's scheme for determining whether or not
vaccination by B.C.G. should be supplied to school leavers. It will
be some time yet before the final outcome of these investigations is
known.
During 1953, Mass Radiography Unit 6a visited Wood Green.
The Public Health Department co-operated very closely in this
venture, while the County Council placed White Hart Lane Child
Welfare Clinic at the disposal of the Unit. The Public Health
Department addressed invitations to members of local organisations
to attend for X-ray, while, through the courtesy of the press, I was
able to have a lengthy article inserted in local papers. We also
arranged for the display of posters and the distribution of leaflets
together with a banner at a prominent site. For the first time, the
parents of children of 12 years and over attending our maintained
schools were invited to take advantage of the presence of the Unit
in Wood Green, on behalf of their children.
The Secretary of the Unit has supplied the following information relating to the work carried out by the Unit over the 8 days during which it operated in Wood Green:
