Samples of the water were taken from both baths at regular
intervals during the year. The results of the tests were uniformly
satisfactory.
The remarks which I set out in the Annual Report for 1952
regarding the value of our swimming baths, remain unaltered. In
our closed and open-air swimming bath we have health amenities
second to none. It is extremely pleasing to note that the open-air
swimming bath at Durnsford Road continues to be regarded as one
of the foremost of its kind in this county, and that its use is being
sought by important outside bodies. This serves to bring the
existence of the bath to the notice of residents and so to extend its
usefulness.
COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF REFUSE
The Borough Engineer and Surveyor, who is responsible for
this service, reports as follows:—
(a) Household refuse is collected weekly by vehicles operated
on the relay system.
(b) Kitchen waste is collected daily from bins distributed at
strategic points throughout the Borough.
(c) Trade and Special refuse is collected as and when
required.
Nine 12 cubic yard capacity Scammell Containers and two
Mechanical Horses are used for collection of Household refuse; one
special Scammell Container and Mechanical Horse for Kitcher
Waste, and one Bedford Lorry for Trade and Special refuse.
During the year 1952/53 the total tonnage of refuse collected
was 11,699 tons; from this, material salvaged was sold for £2,438.
The quantities of salvage were:—
Tons | Cwts. | Qrs. | |
---|---|---|---|
Paper | 230 | 4 | 2 |
Cullet | 10 | 2 | 0 |
Metals | — | 5 | 0 |
Mixed Scrap Iron | 18 | 5 | 0 |
Rags | 7 | 17 | 1 |
In addition 852 tons 123/4 cwts. of Kitchen Waste was collected
and sold for £3,250.
The steam raised by the incineration of the refuse is used for
space and water heating at Western Road Baths.
