POPULATION.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for 1938 was
53,190 and I have used this figure to calculate the birth and death
rates for the year. It represents a decrease of 320 in the population
from that of 1937 which was 53,510, and is the lowest figure
given since 1928. The decrease must be due to movement of
population out of Wood Green of which I have no personal knowledge,
as there is an excess of births year by year over deaths.
This decrease is, however, not very great and for all practical
purposes the population may be regarded as almost stationary.
BIRTHS.
The number of live births registered during the year was 652,
giving a birth-rate of 12.3, exactly the same as for the previous
year. The birth-rate for the whole country was 15.1, and for the
126 great towns (which include Wood Green) it was 15.0. Wood
Green's birth-rate was, therefore, as is usually the case, appreciably
lower than both that of the whole country and that of the great
towns.
Twenty-five stillbirths were registered, 20 male and 5 female.
The births registered in the Borough were distributed in the
different Wards as follows:—
Alexandra-Bowes 67
Town Hall 253
Noel Park 111
