DEATHS.
The number of deaths belonging to Wood Green, after making
the necessary adjustments for inward and outward transfers, was
540, 248 male and 292 female. This represents a death-rate of
10.1 per thousand of population, which is an improvement on 11.1,
the death-rate for the previous year. The death-rate for the whole
country for 1938 was 11.6 and that for the 126 great towns 11.7.
Of the total deaths no fewer than 298 or 55.2 per cent.
occurred in persons over 65 years of age. The corresponding percentage
in 1937 was 57.5 and in 1936, 50.
The distribution of deaths over the year was as follows:—First
quarter, 168; second, 131; third, 107; and fourth, 134.

The distribution of deaths according to Wards was:—

Table III in the Appendix gives the causes of all deaths
occurring in Wood Green during the year, and Table IV shows
their distribution both according to cause of death and to age at
death. The former table is supplied by the Registrar-General,
while the latter is compiled in the Health Department, and this
fact accounts for the discrepancies which are to be detected in the
numbers attached to the individual causes of death. It will be
seen from Table III that the commonest cause of death, as for many
years past, was heart disease which was responsible for no less
than 176 deaths or almost one-third of all deaths. Of these 176
deaths more than two-thirds occurred in persons over 65 years of
age.
