The incidence of scarlet fever and diphtheria, so far as school attendance is concerned, was as follows :—

Scarlet Fever.
92 cases of scarlet fever were notified during the year as compared
with 72 in 1937. The disease was evenly distributed
throughout the year but the ward most affected was Noel Park in
which almost half of the total number of cases occurred. 74 cases
in all were admitted to hospital. The disease was for the most part
of very mild type, and no deaths occurred.
Diphtheria.
63 cases of diphtheria were notified as compared with 46 in
1937. All except one were admitted to hospital. The disease was
of a moderately severe type, and two deaths occurred, both in
children of 4 years.
Immunisation against diphtheria has been carried out as in
previous years, mostly in the infant departments of the elementary
schools, but also among children under school age. The numbers
immunised in 1938 are for several reasons rather less than in
previous years. 462 children received full courses of protective
