of 9,424 houses at the end of 1920. Taking the occupants of each
house at 5.4 per house (the census figure), the total population
would be 50,889, which is manifestly too low having regard to the
overcrowded state of the district due to want of sufficient housing
accommodation.
The Registrar-General's figure is probably nearer correct, and
I have based my figures in this Report on that given by him, i.e.,
52,317, as stated above.
BIRTHS.
There were 1,164 births, as against 750 in 1919 and 691 in
1918.
The births were:—614 males and 550 females; of these 31 were
illegitimate (viz., 22 males and 9 females).
This corresponds to an annual rat of 22.25, compared with
14.31 per thousand in 1919, and 12.88 per thousand in 1918.

The following table gives the number of births registered within and without the district, and the birth rate for each Ward.
