Outlying districts, such as Lower Place, require a Feeding Centre more close at hand. Parents
do not care to send the children far in bad weather, nor to send children of infant school age alone
to the Centres.
Meals are often refused by parents for children attending Christchurch and Salisbury Road
schools on account of the distance to the Kilburn Feeding Centre. There is always a noticeable
drop in the number on a very wet day, or during a spell of inclement weather. There is also a
noticeable diminution in the numbers during the school holidays.
The maximum, minimum and average number of children fed for the whole year is shewn in
the following Table, No. 66.

Selection of Children.—Economic Circumstances.—Special Cases.—No changes have
been made in respect of the selection of children to be fed, but it is noticeable, particularly in the
Kilburn area, that the children apply themselves for meals unauthorised by their parents. The need
of the meals in many of such instances is emphasised by the fact that the same children apply again
and again, although the parents refuse to allow their names to be retained on the registers.
