* Having regard to the number of cases notified the probable number of cases to be nursed is a low
estimate.
Home Nursing requires to be done in the morning and again in the evening, 7 days a week,
namely, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 4.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Where two visits a day are required during
the acute stage of the illness the morning visit is usually the longer. Where only one visit is required
it is usually paid in the morning. On the average a visit may be reckoned at 40 minutes, and one
Nurse, therefore, in a day of 7 hours would do, say, 11 visits.
From the foregoing estimate it will be observed that 6 Nurses would be required for the number
of visits shewn on Table III., assuming that each works 7 hours a day, 7 days a week. A Nurse,
however, would require a day and a half off duty per week, and the total number of Nurses needed
would have to be increased to 8, or 4 Home Nurses to each Clinic.
In connection with these appointments at each Clinic it will be necessary to appoint an
Assistant Matron for the following reasons
(1) That she may receive reports of the Home Nurses and any reports from doctors practising
in Willesden as to the work of the Home Nurses ;
(2) That she may be able to organise their work so that their time is utilised to the best
advantage;
(3) That there may be some responsible person on the premises to interview callers and able
to let them know to what extent a Nurse may be available for a particular case.
In addition the Assistant Matron would be required to assist the Matron with other work at the
Clinic, more particularly in connection with home circumstances of cases.
The above arrangements do not include provision for night duty or for the nurses living in in
connection with the Clinics.
Requisitions for nurses would have to be sent to the Clinics every morning from 9 a.m. till 12
noon, including Sundays.
