pectant Mothers, Maternity Nursing, the nursing of Puerperal Fever, the nursing of Measles in young
children, Whooping Cough in young children, Epidemic Diarrhoea in young children, and Ophthalmia
Neonatorum.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the Board desire that provision should be made
for Home Nursing where necessary in respect of the following conditions
Malaria.
Dysentery.
Trench Fever.
Acute Primary Pneumonia.
Acute Influenzal Pneumonia.
Expectant Mothers.
Maternity Nursing.
Puerperal Fever.
Measles in young children.
Whooping Cough in young children,
Epidemic Diarrhoea in young children, and
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
Certain of these conditions may be excluded from present consideration—Malaria, Dysentery
and Trench Fever because the number of cases is not likely to be great, and Expectant Mothers,
Maternity Nursing, and Puerperal Fever because this is outside the scope of the reference and would be
better dealt with in relation to the question of the Provision of Midwifery. There therefore remains
to be considered the Home Nursing of :—
Acute Primary Pneumonia.
Acute Influenzal Pneumonia.
Measles in young children.
Whooping Cough in young children.
Epidemic Diarrhœa in young children, and
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
I do not think it is practicable to maintain a Staff of Nurses for Acute Influenzal Pneumonia,
as these would only be needed during epidemics when all the Nurses of the Authority, including Health
Visitors, might, for a short period, have to be transferred to this work.
The following Table I. shows the number of deaths at all ages in each year from 1914 to 1918 on
account of Pneumonia, Measles, Whooping Cough, and Epidemic Diarrhoea :—
