DIPHTHERIA.
As compared with previous years, fewer cases of
this disease were admitted. The type of attack was
mild, although several cases of exceptional severity
were admitted during the summer months. The
number of patients treated was 198.
The mortality of 7.7 per cent. is low. In the
years immediately preceding the introduction of
antitoxin the rate was usually about 30 per cent.
A rather larger proportion than usual of the
cases were laryngeal, 21 in all being admitted with
this complication. Ten of these required tracheotomy,
from which operation 9 recovered.
In Table No. 4 the complications arising during
the course of these attacks are shown.
