The system of break-point chlorination installed at the Bath
during 1949 has proved successful. Samples of water are taken
at regular intervals; in all instances, the samples were reported
as wholly satisfactory. Indeed, the standard of water in Barrowell
Green Swimming Bath is even purer than drinking water, from a
bacteriological standpoint. The chlorinating system should be
capable of dealing very rapidly with any anticipated form of
pollution.
Once again, the Superintendent of the Swimming Bath and her
staff have co-operated cordially with the Public Health Department
in all matters relating to hygiene. This is particularly the case in
respect to general cleanliness. It would not be too much to say
that Barrowell Green Swimming Bath might be regarded as an
example in the matter of the standard of cleanliness maintained
in the lavatories, dressing rooms and, indeed, throughout the entire
premises.
Rivers and Streams.—Very few complaints were received
during the year concerning the above.
Prevention of Damage by Pests Act, 1949.— During 1950, 406
complaints of rats and mice were received and dealt with, as against
356 in 1949.
In March, 1950, a baiting and poisoning treatment was carried
out by the Borough Engineer's Department in the Council's soil
sewers. 219 manholes were baited. In 128 of these, complete or
part takes of bait were noted. In September, 1950, test baiting
was carried out by the Borough Engineer's Department to 274
manholes, representing approximately 15 per cent. of the total
manholes on the Council's soil sewers. On the results obtained
from this test, a baiting and poisoning treatment followed, during
which 331 manholes were baited. 228 of these showed complete
or part takes of bait. All the work done in the sewers was carried
out in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of
Agriculture and Fisheries (Infestation Division). An official of the
Ministry visited the district on each occasion, and was given
facilities for inspecting the work while in progress. He expressed
himself entirely satisfied with the way in which the work was being
carried out.
Public Conveniences.—Seventeen public conveniences are
available in the Borough, situated as follows:
Broomfield Park (2).
Arnos Park.
Bramley Sports Ground.
Oakwood Park.
Grovelands Park.
