is a wise measure. It proves to producers, retailers and public
alike that the Borough Council is fully alive to the importance
of a clean, safe milk supply. It also brings possible faults to the
notice of those concerned, and affords an opportunity of investigating
the source of the fault and effecting the necessary remedy.
In almost every instance, we have found that milk producers and
distributors are only too willing to co-operate in correcting
existing faults, and that they are grateful for the advice supplied
by the Sanitary Inspectors.
As I have stated many times before, much better results can
be expected from this type of co-operation than from more rigorous
action through existing legal machinery.
Ice Cream Sampling.—During 1950, 104 samples of ice
cream, as against 71 in 1949, were obtained for bacteriological
examination. Of these:
46 were Grade 1

As with milk, the routine sampling of ice cream fulfils a very
useful purpose. On numerous occasions we have been able to
point out faults, particularly faults in storage and in the actual
sale of ice cream, which have resulted in better grading of subsequent
samples. It should also be remembered that the visiting
of premises for the purpose of taking samples of ice cream affords
the Sanitary Inspectors an opportunity for health education and
practical demonstration. It is becoming more and more obvious
that this work represents perhaps the most important aspect of the
control and supervision of what is becoming virtually a stable
article of diet.
Establishments for Massage or Special Treatment.—Under the
Middlesex County Council Act, twelve existing licences were
renewed.
