The infant mortality rate for 1950 (23.25) is the second lowest
rate recorded in Southgate.
Stillbirths.—12 stillbirths (0 illegitimate) were accredited to the
district for 1950. This is equal to a death-rate of 13.76 (live and
still births) the corresponding figures for 1949 being 21 stillbirths,
with a rate of 21.76. The rate per 1,000 of the population was 0.162,
the rates for England and Wales and London being 0.37 and 0.36
respectively for 1950. The average rate for the past ten years was
22.87.
The stillbirth-rate for 1950 (13.76) is the lowest rate yet
recorded in Southgate.
Maternal Mortality.—No deaths which were attributable to
causes connected with childbirth occurred during 1950. This is
the third occasion in recent years when no deaths in this category
have been recorded in Southgate, the two previous years being
1947 and 1948. In 1949 two deaths occurred giving a rate per
1,000 births (live and still) of 2.07.
Mortality of Toddlers. -Six deaths occurred amongst children
of the age group 1-5 years during 1950. This represents a deathrate
of 0.07 per 1,000 of the population, and 0.69 per cent of the
total deaths for the year at all ages. In 1949 there were six deathsgiving
a death-rate of 0.08 and a percentage of 0.73.
Mortality of Persons over the Age of 65.—Six hundred and
eighteen or 71.19 per cent of the total deaths during the year
occurred in persons over the age of 65. Of these, 207 died between
the ages of 80 and 90, while a further 29 were over the latter age
(7 males the oldest being 94, and 22 females the eldest being 97).
Diseases of the heart and circulation formed the largest group
appearing in the list of causes of death of elderly persons. This
is in keeping with the findings of recent years.
