Although the list of diseases found in the animals slaughtered
and the total amount of meat, etc., surrendered may appear formidable
at first glance, these figures must be considered in the light of
the number of carcases examined during the year. The percentage
of unsound meat is relatively exceedingly small, and should be
taken as ah indication of the high quality of Southgate's supplies.
Infringements.— The following infringements were discovered
and dealt with during the year:—
1. Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933.
Animals being killed without being first effectually
stunned with a mechanically operated instrument
2
Other Foods. —The bakehouses, fish, fruit and grocers' shops
situated within the district continue to be kept under observation.
The remarks which I made in last year's Annual Report regarding
the lack of adequate legislation controlling these premises still
apply. Much as we should like to effect still further improvements
in existing conditions, our hands are tied by the antiquated legal
machinery at present provided.
Seven boxes (98 lbs.) of kippers and 84 lbs. cod fillets were
voluntarily surrendered during the year.
