County Council will operate the provisions of the new Midwives
Act, it is very probable that this part of the Council's work will be
taken over. As the scale which they propose to adopt is at least as
generous as our own, it would appear that Southgate mothers will
not suffer in any way following the change-over.
Attendance at Centres of Non-Southgate Mothers.—As
the Hertfordshire County Council are contemplating the construction
of a Welfare Centre in East Barnet at an early date, we may
look forward to the time when we will no longer be required to treat
large numbers of non-Southgate mothers at our Centres. Following
the rapid erection of houses on our borders, these numbers have
been increasing month by month until the position has become wellnigh
impossible. Southgate has agreed to accept East Barnet
mothers until such time as the East Barnet Centre is available,
always provided that this can be done without jeopardising the
services available to our own inhabitants. The Committee has
given this matter its careful consideration from time to time and
will doubtless oontinue to do so until the position is finally
re-adjusted.

Voluntary Helpers.— The Voluntary Helpers' Committee
again carried out most useful work in connection with the Centres
within the Borough throughout the year. Their Annual Christmas
Party was an unqualified success, but it must not be thought that
the holding of this party is the sum total of the Voluntary Helpers'
activities. Their usefulness is apparent in many other directions,
and the Maternity and Child Welfare services undoubtedly owe
them the deepest debt of gratitude.
General.—One of the most interesting features of the past
six years' work has been the growth and extension of the Maternity
and Child Welfare services within the Borough. Some idea of the
