HOUSE TO HOUSE INSPECTION.

During the year 183 houses have been inspected, as follows:—

The principal defects discovered were:—103 dirty
and dilapidated premises, 19 leaking roofs, 47 premises
with defective gutters and rainwater pipes, 29 defective
flushing apparatus, 34 defective W.C. basins and traps,
33 insufficient ashpits, 83 paving of yards or forecourts
defective, 17 water closet basins dirty, 30 drinking water
cisterns dirty or without covers, and drains were relaid
at 46 premises.
This entailed 718 re-inspections of works in hand.
A detailed report of Vineleigh Road was made to
the Sanitary Committee. There are 79 houses in the
road and all but eight are let as flats for two families.
The flat consists of two rooms, kitchen and scullery,
and one W.C. for two flats (one house). 104 flats and six
single houses were occupied, and accommodated 606
persons; 168 males, 153 females, and 185 children under
14 years of age. In five instances two families, or members
of more than one family, inhabited one flat. Four
cases of overcrowding were found, which have since been
abated.
