Analysis of these figures shows one especially satisfying
feature, and that is a significant fall in the number of deaths
attributable to non-tuberculous respiratory diseases, and this must
be considered particularly gratifying in a year in which influenza
was so prevalent. It is also worth noting that deaths from
tuberculosis reached the very low figure of four, and while this
disease still exists in our community, the number of deaths it
causes is unlikely to be reduced below its present figure. The
remaining figures quoted above show no marked changes from the
previous year, and therefore do not appear to call for special
comment.

These figures in an average year, follow the same pattern, that
is their peak occurs in January and February followed by a
gradual fall, reaching rock bottom in August and followed thereafter
by a steady climb during the rest of the year. However,
during the year under review, the incidence of sickness reached a
very high peak during October, the month in which the influenza
epidemic was at its height, and although considerably reduced in
the remaining two months of the year, still continued at a level
considerably above normal.
Medical Examinations.
One hundred and eleven examinations of members or potential
members of the staff were carried out during the year.
