Births.
One thousand, three hundred and two live births were
registered during the year, as against one thousand, two hundred
and nineteen during 1956.
The birth rate for the year is 18-0 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate, for comparison with other areas, is 17*8.
The adjusted rate is *7 higher than that for 1956, and is well
above that for England and Wales as a whole.
Of the births registered, 677 were males and 625 females.
Thirteen stillbirths occurred in the area, 9 males and 4 females.
This gives a stillbirth rate of 9.9 per 1,000 live and still births, and
is a considerable decrease from the figure of 161 for the previous
year.
Deaths.
Six hundred and twenty-eight deaths belonging to the Urban
District were registered during the year. Of this number 333 were
males and 295 females, giving a crude death rate of 8-7 per 1,000
total population. The area comparability factor for deaths is 112
therefore the adjusted rate is 9*7 per 1,000 total population, and
this compares favourably with the rate of 11*5 for England and
Wales.
