The population has for the first time topped the 70,000 mark
and continues the steady tendency to increase shown over recent
years. It is interesting to note that since 1947 the total increase
is 12,330.
Births.
One thousand two hundred and nineteen live births were
registered during the year, as against one thousand and eighty-three
during 1955.
The birth rate for the year is 17.3 per 1,000 total population.
The adjusted rate, for comparison with other areas, is 17.1.
Of the births registered 620 were males and 599 females.
The adjusted rate is a little higher than that for 1955, and is
well above that for England and Wales as a whole.
Stillbirths, of which there were 20, were represented by 9 males
and 11 females. This gives a stillbirth rate of 16.1 per 1,000 live
and still births, and is a decrease from last year's figure of 17.24.
Deaths.
648 deaths belonging to the Urban District were registered
during the year. Of this number 344 were males and 304 females,
giving a crude death rate of 9.2 per 1,000 total population. The
area comparability factor for deaths is 1.08 therefore the adjusted
rate is 9.9 per 1,000 total population, and this compares favourably
with the rate of 11.7 for England and Wales.
