POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the population of the Urban
District mid-year 1954, is 66,380. This figure shows an increase of
1,900 over that for the previous year, and gives a density of 3.2
persons to the acre.
The natural increase of population (measured by excess of births
over deaths), was 531.

BIRTHS.
The Birth Rate for 1954 is 15.8 per 1,000 total population, as
compared with a rate of 14.4 for 1953.
There were 1,047 live births (534 males and 513 females) registered
during the year.
The average rate for the past five years is 14.9 per 1,000
population.
Illegitimate Births.
Twenty-one illegitimate births were registered, of which 11 were
males and 10 females.
The illegitimate birth rate for the year is 0.32 per 1,000 total
population, and 19.5 per 1,000 live and still births.
Stillbirths.
The stillbirth rate for the district is 29.65 per 1,000 live and still
births, and 0,48 per 1,000 total population.
Thirty-two stillbirths were registered in the area during 1954, of
which 17 were males and 15 females.
