A total of ten thousand, eight hundred and eighty children under the age of fifteen years had completed a course of immunisation at the 31st December, 1953, out of a total of fifteen thousand, two hundred and forty-six children—i.e., 71 per cent.

Typhoid Fever.
No cases were notified during 1953.
Puerperal Pyrexia.
Forty-eight cases were notified. Forty-seven were institutionally
treated and one home nursed. This represents an attack rate of 50.8
per 1,000 total births.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
One case was notified. This was treated in hospital and made a
satisfactory recovery. There was no impairment of vision.
Pemphigus Neonatorum.
No cases were notified during the year.
Measles.
Seven hundred and sixty-one cases were notified, giving an attack
rate of 11.8 per 1,000 population. This figure showed a slight decrease
compared with that for 1952 (786 cases).
Nineteen of these cases were removed to hospital and the
remainder home nursed.
There was one death from this disease.
Whooping Cough.
Three hundred and fifty-two notifications of this disease were
received during the year, representing an attack rate of 5.5 per 1,000
population. Three cases were admitted to hospital and the remainder
home nursed. This figure also showed a slight decrease on the 386
cases notified during 1952.
