SOCIAL CONDITIONS.
The Urban District of Hayes and Harlington comprises the
parishes of Hayes and Harlington together with that portion of
Cranford which lies west of the River Crane. It is about eight
square miles in extent, varying in height from 70 feet above
sea-level in the south-eastern part to 182 feet in the northwestern
part. The greater part of the district is flat and has a
subsoil of clay with occasional extensive patches of gravel.
The population of Hayes and Harlington is chiefly industrial,
but four dairy farms and a few market gardens remain. Unemployment
has nearly doubled during the year over the figures
for 1937. The exact figures are 97 per cent. for the total (male
and female) increase ; the percentage of male increase is, however,
only 82, while the female increase is 126 per cent.

Building continues at a great rate, 2,149 houses having been
built during the year. About 345 acres (6.7 per cent.) have
either been utilised for parks or have been scheduled as open
spaces.
The main Oxford road runs east to west through the area, and
this is now being changed from a narrow road into a wide
arterial road with dual carriageways and cycle tracks.
