E(5) Food Hygiene.
The Food Hygiene Regulations 1955.
These regulations are implemented at all types of food
premises, as a result of which hygiene standards have improved
considerably. Having regard to the availability of
ample food supplies, it is apparent that the majority of
traders are becoming increasingly conscious of a discriminating
purchasing public, and this in itself has considerably
aided an all-round improvement in the display of foodstuffs
in an endeavour to attract the hygienic minded purchasers.
In this particular regard, many food traders have
effected improvements much in excess of the requirements
of the Food Hygiene Regulations and in many instances
shops have been completely re-constructed, and their display
fronts re-designed. Such improvements have enhanced
greatly the appearance of these business premises, and the
attainment ot the best possible standards undoubtedly
makes all the requisite planning and the work involved,
well worth while.
During the year, the following Food Hygiene Codes of
Practice under Section 13 (8) of the Food and Drugs Act
1955 were issued by the Ministry of Health in conjunction
with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food: —
No. 1. Hygiene in the Retail Meat Trade
No. 2. The Hygienic Transport and Handling of
Meat.
The Codes in question have no statutory values, neither
are they intended to be an interpretation of the requirements
of the Food Hygiene Regulations. Their main object
is to give guidance to persons in the retail meat trade who
are responsible for compliance with the Regulations.
