D(15). The House Purchase and Housing Act 1959.
This Act came into force on 14th June, Part 2 of the
Act providing for the payment by Local Authorities of
standard grants in respect of improvement of dwellings
built before 1945 by provision of the following amenities
: —
(a) a fixed bath or shower in a bathroom,
(b) a wash-hand basin,
(c) a hot water supply,
(d) a water closet in, or contiguous to the dwelling,
(e) satisfactory facilities for storing food.
Where a dwelling is already provided with some of
the above mentioned amenities, a reduced grant is payable
for providing those which it lacks,
The object of the Act is to obtain an enhanced standard
of fitness in conformity with that of Section 4 of the
Housing Act 1957 so as to secure that dwellings subject
to grant will remain fit and available for use as dwellings
for a period of not less than 15 years.
During the period under review, 23 standard grant
applications were approved.
