Report of the School Medical
Officer,
As suggested by the Board of Education, the Annual
Report of the School Medical Services for purposes of war
economy is again shortened and curtailed.
Under the authority of the Erith Education Committee
there are 10 provided schools with 18 departments including
one Nursery School, and one non-provided school with one
department.
At the end of 1941 there were 3,943 children on the roll of the elementary schools, distributed as follows: —
Nursery School | 54 |
Infants Schools | 929 |
Junior Mixed and Infants Schools | 278 |
Junior Schools | 1356 |
Senior Schools | 1326 |
In addition there were in Special Schools (outside the District) | 5 |
The Belvedere Infants School badly damaged by enemy
action, is to be re-built as a full-time War Nursery for children
of 0—5 years of age.
Further to help in the problem of the custody of children
under 5 years of age (3—5 year olds) whose mothers wish to
undertake work in factories or otherwise participate in the war
effort, a nursery school has been opened in one wing of the
Bedonwell Hill School building.
This portion of the building was vacant owing to the
reduction in numbers of children in the school through evacuation
and after various alterations including the provision of
a paddling pool and sand pit, has provided a nursery school
with 50 places.
All entrants have been medically examined, and efforts
are being made to protect them against diphtheria and also,
if possible, against whooping-cough.
