Report of the School Medical
Officer.
As a request has been included in Form 6M of the Medical
Branch of the Board of Education, which is the Annual Official
Instruction as to the method of presentation of these reports,
to keep the report as brief as possible owing to the urgent need
for economy, observations will be restricted to what may be
regarded as essential. Items which have been recorded in
detail in previous years will only be included for the purpose
of retaining the reference value of the report, and no further
detail will be given to them other than appears to be necessary
to secure that object.

The Borough of Erith was entirely included in the evacuation areas, and evacuation of the school children was carried out on 5th September, 1939.

The School Population of the Borough according to the register at 1st September, 1939, was5131
The number of children evacuated was1592
Number of children remaining in the reception area at 1st December, 1939, was632

As a result of a strong desire of the Committee to maintain
contact with these evacuated children, arrangements were made
with the generous co-operation of the County Medical Officer,
for visits to be paid to the schools and billets in the reception
area, and reports on the welfare of the children to be made
to the Erith Education Committee.
These reports invariably showed that the Erith children
were being well looked after, were happy and were enjoying
increasing good health and physical condition, and revealed no
instances where necessary services were unavailable.
